ROMERILLO is a Tzotzil community in the municipality of San Juan Chamula. According to the belief of the indigenous people of Romerillo community, the souls of the deceased come to visit their relatives every November 1st, so 15 days before the relatives organize and clean roads, sidewalks, patios and surroundings so that “The deseased won’t get lost or stumble upon arrival.” The Romerillo Pantheon, located on a mountain crowned with 22 huge Tzotzil crosses, is one of the places rarely visited by tourists and is a very genuine experience, rough in some way. ZINACANTAN, an indigenous village of Tzeltal culture. The pantheon of Zinacanatan will be decorated with abundance of floral arrangements, as flower cultivation is one of the main activities of Zinacantan. Located at 2,700 meters, the pantheon offers a beautiful view and a mystical air. Then we will visit a local family to share the excitement of the celebration and also learn how to make tortilla by hand.
SAN JUAN CHAMULA, a town of Tzotzil culture half an hour from San Cristobal. In the highlands this festival has a mixture of emotions; Color, joy, pain and memories are manifested every year, when the souls of the faithful departed come to visit the earthly world. A Tsotsil indigenous tradition, inherited from their Mayan ancestors that continues to this day. We will join the celebrations in the pantheon with respect. Then, we will visit the church of Chamula with explanations of the rituals, to finish our visit in a house of a local family.
