Description
The town of Chiapa de Corzo is much more than a jetty to take the boat to the Cañon del Sumidero! This town has history and tradition since pre-Hispanic times that its people proudly celebrate every year during two weeks of January: the Fiesta Grande.
The Parachico dance has been designated Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO since 2009. We invite you year-round on a tour to learn about the history of the Parachicos and legends, to visit traditional houses and the village artisans who work to prepare the Fiesta Grande.
The Fiesta Grande de Chiapa de Corzo is a religious, traditional and popular celebration, in which the entire population of this little town participates. The Fiesta Grande brings a lot of symbolism and legends. It has pre-Hispanic origin, to later be fused with Christianity, mainly related to the image of San Sebastián, brought by the Spanish.
We will travel by private transport 50 minutes from San Cristobal. We will start with a tour on the speed boat through the Sumidero Canyon (2.5 hour tour NOT INCLUDED in the price). We will take it from a jetty on the town outskirts, since it offers better service and is less crowded.
We are going to savor local dishes such as pepita con tasajo and pozol which have their origin in pre-Hispanic times!
